Java Applet SupportJava is not supported on iOS (Apple iPhones and iPads) or Android (e.g. Galaxy/Nexus phones and tablets). On desktop computers, the Google Chrome browser also dropped support for Java applets from version 45 onwards as has Firefox from version 52 onwards (however, see below for the Firefox ESR version which will support Java until some point in 2018). Microsoft's Edge browser has never supported Java although Internet Explorer 11 still does.
Installing Java on Desktop PCs and MacsMeanwhile, if you are using a browser that still supports Java and haven't already installed it then please visit the main Java site in order to download and install it.
Java Security MessagesIf you upgrade your version of Java to Java 7 Update 51 or later it's more than likely you will start seeing security messages such as Application Blocked by Security Settings as shown on the right.
To fix these and get the Java applets running you need to run the Configure Java program:
- On Windows 7 or Vista click the Start button and enter java in the search box. Click Configure Java when it appears.
- On Windows XP click the Start button, then All Programs and look for the Java entry. You will find the Configure Java program inside that.
- On Windows 8/8.1 go to the Start screen, type java and click Configure Java when it appears.
- On Windows 10 enter java in the search box (you may need to click the icon first) and click Configure Java when it appears.
- On Mac OS X go to the System Preferences and click the Java icon.
to this list by clicking the Add button, entering the name exactly as shown in bold above (don't miss out the http:// part otherwise it won't be accepted). When OK button is clicked you will asked to confirm your addition by clicking the Continue button. When you try to run a Java applet it will now replace the security message with one that asks if it is ok to actually run the applet.

For those wishing to distribute the site list via Group Policy on their Windows Server domain then there are some instructions here.
Manual Check RequiredIf you see the message Manual Check Required against the Java Enabled item when using the Check Computer on either the log in page or the Technical Help page then you will be using a version of Internet Explorer (IE). If Java applets are not working (especially if the field to the right of Java Installed remains blank) then click on the Tools menu and select Internet Options. Click the Advanced tab and scroll down the list until you see the Java entry and make sure that it is enabled - sometimes you may see more than one type of JRE (Java Runtime Environment) listed, if one doesn't work then try enabling a different one. You will need to close and restart IE before the changes to the Java installation are recognised.
For any other Java-related problems (apart from security messages - see below) please make sure you are using the latest version of Java. To check your version of Java under Windows then right-click the Java icon in your System Tray - the bottom right section of your task bar - and then click the About option which should reveal the version you currently have installed. If it is old then upgrade to a later version.
